From the shadows
2005
Arrival in Sadr City. Team Voodoo. Learning that this fight cannot be won by shooting, and that Muqtada al-Sadr is not a man in a cave but a name with power over three million people.
Restrepo showed you the shooting. This shows you the talking — and fifteen years later, it shows you that the talking worked.
Every Iraq film ever made is about kinetic war: the door kicked in, the IED, the convoy. Not one has been about the other war — the one fought with a voice, a script, a whispered conversation at night, a message aimed at the one person in the room who might change their mind.
This story has the thing those films don’t have: an ending. In October 2019, the children of Sadr City — the ones who took the soccer balls, who heard the word democracy for the first time from an American soldier crouched at their eye level — launched a non-violent revolution for a secular government, the rule of law, and equal rights for women. The seed took fifteen years to break the ground.
And it has the thing almost no war story has: the enemy’s own testimony. A man inside the militia, still alive, still inside, telling his half of the same events.
Boone Cutler died in September 2025. The film is now his last transmission.
The book’s four parts are already the film’s four acts. Do not restructure them.

2005–2006
The craft. The water sector. The loudspeaker over the wall. The elder handed a script who stops reading it and starts meaning it.
2006–2007
The Golden Shrine. The council member they missed by three minutes. Commanders who wanted a number for a thing that cannot be counted. Then Walter Reed, and a man who misses the war.
2019–now
The kids are grown. October 2019: a non-violent revolution for a secular government, the rule of law, and equal rights for women. The seed took fourteen years to break the ground.
| Film | What it proves |
|---|---|
| Flee (2021) | Oscar-nominated in three categories; used stylized animation specifically to protect a living subject’s identity. The exact precedent for how Baghdad Mo appears on screen. |
| Waltz with Bashir (2008) | A soldier’s memoir of a Middle East deployment, reconstructed non-photorealistically, and taken seriously as documentary. |
| Restrepo (2010) | The single-deployment, single-place war documentary that broke out. |
| The Act of Killing / The Look of Silence | Perpetrator testimony as the spine of the film. |
| Sir! No Sir! / Last Days in Vietnam | Veteran-driven docs that found their audience through the community first and distribution second. |
3 to 4 minutes
The tone piece. Boone’s own recorded voice over the Walter Reed opening, cut against night ops and the loudspeaker sequences, landing on the 2019 revolution footage. Ends on a title card: He didn’t live to see this made.
Purpose
Gets meetings. Costs least. Build first.
8 to 12 minutes
The water sector sequence. One location, small cast, no combat. It demonstrates the only thing a buyer needs to believe: that persuasion is more cinematic than gunfire.
Purpose
Proves the film can be directed, not just described.
ongoing — start immediately
Surviving Team Voodoo members. Interpreters. Boone’s family. Baghdad Mo, audio only. Every one of these people is getting older and harder to find, and this material is the film’s spine whether it ends up a feature or a series.
Purpose
Irreplaceable. Perishable. Highest priority after the sizzle.
the thing itself
Four movements suit a four-part limited series as naturally as a feature. Pitch both.
Purpose
Everything above exists to get here.
Rights → sizzle → app launch → audience numbers → financing. The companion is not merchandise. It is the proof of audience you hand a financier when they ask who this film is for.
These are in the film package, the term sheet, the reconstruction brief, and the deck. They are the same three rules everywhere on purpose. Declared up front, they are what lets the production use modern tools everywhere else without anyone asking what else was faked.
Boone dedicated the book to the reader’s humanity, and told them not to pray for peace. Whatever else the film does, it has to be brave enough to keep that line in.
