Reconstruction

A memory that has been left out in the sun. Bleached, grained, and lit by streetlight.

01 What this register is for

There is almost no usable footage of Sadr City in 2005. What exists is helmet-cam, news pool, and a handful of stills. Everything this film needs to show — the water tanks, the night rooms, the loudspeaker truck in an empty street, the Starship corridor — was never filmed by anyone.

The reconstruction register exists to show those things. It is not a substitute for archive and it never pretends to be archive. Its look is the label: the audience should be able to tell, from one frame with the sound off, that they are inside a memory rather than a record.

That distinction is the film’s credibility, and credibility is the whole subject of the film. It also happens to be the only reason this story can be made at a budget anyone will fund.

02 The style

Dust and sodium

Five values, no others. Colour-grade every generation into this set in post rather than trusting the model to hold it.

Night#1A1712

Shadow, interiors, the Starship

Dust#CFC5B1

Daylight, walls, road, sky-adjacent

Sodium#E8A33D

Streetlight, lamplight, the loudspeaker horn, fire

Signal#6BAFAB

Only in Mo’s material. Nowhere else.

Wound#8C2B25

Reserved. Fewer than five shots in the film.

Texture

Heavy 35mm grain, pushed. A visible edge treatment on every frame — a soft ink line where high-contrast shapes meet, so figures read as drawn-over rather than photographed. Slight chromatic bleed at frame edges.

Motion

Stepped, not smooth. Render at 24fps, then hold every second frame so movement lands at an effective 12fps. This single choice does more than any other to signal reconstruction to a viewer who has never thought about it.

Camera

Locked-off or very slow push. No handheld. No drone. No lens flare. The camera in the memory register does not behave like a camera someone was holding — it behaves like attention.

Faces

The register does not do close-up faces of identifiable people. Figures are backs, hands, silhouettes, mid-shots at distance, or figures cut by shadow. This is a style rule and a safety rule at once, and it is not negotiable per shot.

03 What is never generated

This list is structural. It is not a per-shot judgement call and it does not get relaxed under deadline.

  1. Muqtada al-Sadr, or any other identifiable living public figure. No likeness, no voice, no back-of-head-that-is-obviously-him. He is present in the film through other people’s testimony and through real archival material only.
  2. Baghdad Mo, in any form that could identify him. No face, no build, no distinguishing feature, no street he could be placed on, no interior that could be his. He appears as figure-in-silhouette and altered voice only, and every frame of his material is reviewed before it leaves the building.
  3. Any real named soldier, interpreter, or civilian, unless that person (or their estate) has signed a likeness consent and the shot is inside its scope.
  4. Boone Cutler’s face or voice, in this version of the brief. Reconstruction shots of Boone are backs, hands, and silhouettes only until the estate’s digital-likeness consent is executed under section 4 of the term sheet. His real photographs and his real recorded voice are record-register material and are used freely.
  5. Anything that could pass as documentary evidence of an event: no fake news chyrons, no fake body-cam, no fake photograph of an atrocity, no invented document. The film’s whole argument dies the day one of these is found.

The hero for /listen/. The instrument at rest on the thing it is about to read.

L1LISTEN · 5s · push

A single tall doorway of hard light in a dark concrete wall at night, fine dust hanging in the beam, the room around it entirely black, nobody present.

Part I — from the shadows.

L2LISTEN · 5s · hold

Two empty chairs turned to face each other very close in a bare room lit by one low lamp at night, small tea glasses on the floor between them, nobody seated.

Part II — the whispered truth. The chairs are the argument.

An empty folding cot in a bare concrete room in hard midday light, a metal footlocker closed at its end, one shaft of dusty light across the floor, nobody present.

Part III — the cost.

L4LISTEN · 6s · push

A wide empty road at dawn seen from ground level running straight to a hazed flat horizon, low scrub on both shoulders, no vehicles and no people anywhere.

The card that closes the film

Portions of this film are reconstruction. Where no photographic or video record exists of the events described, those events have been illustrated. They are rendered in a distinct visual style throughout so that the viewer can always tell record from reconstruction. No archival footage has been altered, and no person has been depicted saying or doing anything they did not say or do.

Put this card in the sizzle reel too, at the very end, in small type. Every buyer in the room will be wondering about it. Answering before they ask is worth more than the eight seconds it costs.
