Provenance

The film’s thesis is that provenance is what separates truth from propaganda. A production that cannot prove its own has lost the argument before the first review.

01 The declaration
What these cuts are

Portions of these films are reconstruction. Where no photographic or video record exists of the events described, those events have been illustrated. They are rendered in a distinct visual style throughout so that the viewer can always tell record from reconstruction. No archival footage has been altered, and no person has been depicted saying or doing anything they did not say or do.

And what they are not

Not one frame of archive has been licensed. Wherever the cut calls for record it holds a card naming exactly what must be cleared, and nothing has been put in its place.

Every picture is either a generated frame or a licensed elemental loop — dust, smoke, embers, sand, water, stars, a turning fan. Both live in the [X] reconstruction register and both are labelled [X] on screen. The elemental loops carry no location claim, no identifiable person and no insignia: they are weather and light, not evidence. They are credited in full below.

Every voice is synthesised, and labelled on screen while it speaks. Boone Cutler’s lines are his own written words read by a stand-in. The reconstruction brief permits that only after the estate’s digital-likeness consent is executed under section 4 of the term sheet, so these are development cuts and his authentic recorded voice replaces every one of those lines before public release.

The sound in the reconstruction register is synthesised too — room tone, the drone, the crowd, the loudspeaker. None of it is a field recording, and none of it is laid under a record cue.

No testimony has been captured. The two testimony cards in the sizzle carry a written placeholder line as type. No synthetic voice has ever been used to speak testimony, and none ever will be.

01b The reading

The whole book, read aloud, in 9 voices

9.4 hours of it, across 25 chapters. Listen →

What the reading is

Every voice in it is synthetic, without exception. Boone Cutler died on 18 September 2025 and no recording of his voice appears anywhere in it. Every chapter says so out loud before it begins, and the label on the reading page stays on screen for as long as audio is playing, naming whichever voice currently holds the microphone.

It is built against a condition that has not been met. The reconstruction brief §3 and the term sheet §4 permit a Boone-alike only once the estate’s digital-likeness consent is executed. It was asked for and it was built, with the condition made visible rather than left silent. If the estate declines, this comes down.

His words are not ours. Nothing in the text was rewritten, tidied, abridged or expanded for the reading. The build proves it rather than promising it: every chapter is reassembled out of the segments that were actually rendered and diffed against the manuscript, and it fails if a single paragraph differs. That check has already caught one fault — a chunker that silently lost characters from three long paragraphs.

Nothing was dropped in the reading either. Speech synthesis does not raise an error when it skips a clause; it returns a clean, shorter reading. So the audio is transcribed back and diffed against the words that went in. The check is calibrated in both directions on every run: it is shown reads it must pass and planted drops it must catch, and it refuses to certify if it cannot demonstrate both.

A quarter of this book is not the author speaking, and the reading says so. Roughly 24% of it is Baghdad Mo’s own first-person testimony, and a further 7% is documents — reports, orders, letters. Reading all of that in one voice would have flattened the one thing the book does structurally, which is hand the microphone over. The Foreword, written and signed by another veteran, and the closing jacket copy are not read in the author’s voice at all.

The room under the reading is synthesised in your browser out of noise and filters. Not one sample, not one field recording. It never follows the story to a place, because nothing in it was recorded in any place — it follows the voice and the part of the book, both of which are properties of the text. Nothing at all plays under a prayer or under a declaration. It can be switched off.

Why Mo’s alteration is lighter here than in the films

He is alive, he is inside, and he is naming a government, so his voice is altered in both. The reading now carries the same pitch the films use — a fourteen per cent drop — and holds him about a tenth slower than his own pace throughout, which suits nearly three hours of testimony better than the films’ seconds-long cues do.

It did not start there. The films’ filter sets the sample rate to a fixed number, which is only ever correct if you already know what the voice engine returns. The films’ engine returns 44.1 kHz; this one returns 24 kHz. The same expression therefore ran him at nearly double speed for the whole of the first build, and every gate on the project reported green — because the check that listens to the reading deliberately listens to the take from before the alteration, so that a pitch-shifted voice is not failed for being pitch-shifted. Nothing was measuring the alteration itself. Something is now: the build declares how much it alters him and the gate measures real files against that number.

02 The generation log

39 frames

An errors-and-omissions insurer asks for this before they write the policy, and a distributor asks for it before they take delivery. Starting the log after two hundred clips exist is how projects lose weeks. This one started at shot one.

On seeds

The brief asks for a fixed seed per sequence, recorded. The image model used here exposes no seed parameter, so the log records that fact plainly and carries a SHA-256 of the frame instead — which ties any frame in the cut back to its row exactly, even though it cannot reproduce it. Continuity across a sequence was held by reusing the rendered frame rather than by re-rolling a seed: the corridor retreat in the sizzle is the arrival shot, reversed.

Why an element and never a place

A stock shot of a street would be doing the job the [R] cards exist to refuse — standing in for a record nobody has licensed. Screening candidates on the thumbnail alone was not enough: of a first set of twelve, one “dust” clip was falling snow, one “sand drift” was sea surf, and one “embers” clip is titled a black and white image of a person with orange lights. Wider desert candidates carried a dirt bike, a beach, a person, and a paved road through Joshua trees. What ships is weather.

05 Still to do
  • Attach C2PA or equivalent content credentials to every delivered asset.
  • Licence the archival material named on every [R] card, or cut the beat.
  • Execute the estate’s digital-likeness consent, then replace every stand-in line with Boone Cutler’s authentic recorded voice from the audio archive.
  • Capture the testimony. Two cards in the sizzle are waiting on it, and it is the only genuinely perishable item in the whole package.
